Israel’s former Prime Minister #GoldaMeir once said "The Egyptians could run to Egypt, the Syrians into Syria. The only place we could run was into the sea, and before we did that we might as well fight." It is no surprise that geo-political circumstances often dictate the kind of films that emanate from a region and that is so true for Israel as well. The Mossad organisation is acknowledged as one of the World’s best in terms of counter surveillance as well as surgical strikes.
ASHOK’s FIVE reviews the eight-part series #Tehran streaming on #AppleTV+. For fans of the #Fauda series this is veritable delight and you will figure out the similarity in making soon enough. The writer and creator is the same - #MosheZonder.
The plot is slow-burn, full of suspense and has a plethora of twists that keep you hooked. #NivSultan plays Mossad agent Tamara who is Iranian born but brought up in Israel. She is deputed to Tehran on a mission to destroy Iran’s nuclear program. Here she comes up against a worthy rival in the form of Faraz (#ShaunToub) who is ready to put his country ahead of even his family.
The hallmark of #Tehran is the sketching of the characters – they are very believable, and this makes them all the more appealing. In a male dominated world, Tamara stands out as a capable agent but with her own vulnerabilities. Director #DanielSyrkin does not bother to show the Iranian society as being flawed. There is no jingoism and the citizens are not opposed to the regime.
The overhead drone shots of the city help in building up the suspense. The city of Tehran is skilfully recreated in Athens and you will love to see how authentic it looks.
I find it fascinating that a small country like Israel is now the origin of so many shows and exports a considerable to the US as well. The shows are centred around the political conflict of the region and showcase their brilliance in technology, communication and on-ground espionage. #Tehran is right up there in the manner in which it has been created and I especially liked the manner in which they portray that even the Mossad can make mistakes. The plan does get botched up sometimes. And that perhaps ensures we will have one more season coming up soon?
