#RalphWaldoEmerson once said “A great man is always willing to be little”.
ASHOK’s FIVE reviews #KatyarKuljatGhusali the Marathi film by Director #SubodhBhave based on #PurushottamDarvekhar’s classic play. In the opening scene, the king of Vishrampur tells his wife that the katyar (dagger) is an apt prize for the chief court musician since it helps kill the ego that is a trapping of fame and fortune.
#KatyarKuljatGhusali tells the story of the clash of two versatile musicians Pandit Bhanushankar Shastri (#ShankarMahadevan) and Khan Sahab Hussain Bareliwale (#SachinPilgaonkar). More than that though it is a story of fame, fortune, jealousy, deceit, ego, treachery, discipline, love and remorse. A story of life itself.
1. Bhanushankar Shastri is the official Pandit in the court of the king of Vishrampur. The period is set somewhere during the British era in India. He is a benevolent man upholding the art of music and its values. On the other hand, there is Khan Saheb who is egoistic, jealous and ready to scheme to occupy the chair. Shastri is poisoned and rendered unable to sing and Khan Saheb occupies the position. Meanwhile, a disciple of Shastri comes in search of him and engages Khan Saheb in a duel which could end up with death or revenge. The film is a musical masterpiece and contrasts arrogance with discipline.
2. #ShankarMahadevan is a revelation as he plays his role adroitly. The acting honours however go to #SachinPilgaonkar who displays his skill, ego, frustration, revenge and remorse in his performance.
3. Supporting them is a cast that includes #SakshiTanwar as Nabila, #MrunmayeeDeshpande as Uma, #AmruthaKhanvikar as Zareena and #SubodhBave as Sadashiv. Pandit Shastri loses his voice after being poisoned by Nabila. Khan Saheb goes on to denounce the act claiming ignorance and severs his relationship with Nabila. The daughters of the protagonists bring in the humane touch to the story till such time the disciple Sadashiv enters. The court scenes where Sadashiv takes on Khan Sahab in a head-to-head musical battle is enthralling.
4. The rendition of the classic Soorat Piya ki, Dil ki Paish and Ghei Chanda Makranda by the trip of Rahul Deshpande, Shankar Mahadevan and Mahesh Kale are brilliant. Watch out for the performances.
5. The use of the dagger as a metaphor for the baser human emotions and how these translate in this story of a battle of musicians is fascinating. At the end, there are no heroes and no villains and the power of the art and one’s commitment to it is what can win over hearts.
#KatyarKaljatGhusali is yet another Marathi film that dares to be innovative; it is a tad too long and could have done with tighter editing but manages to deliver its message ever so deftly! Watch it for many life lessons delivered so succinctly!
