It is fascinating to see regional content travelling far and wide and being accepted as mainstream. Creators of the Israeli hit show #Fauda surely believe that they have not just created a franchise but a space that they can truly own. Time will tell whether this will succeed, but for now fans of the stockily built #LiorRaz will surely love this new avatar of Doron Kabilio!
The remote can rest in the aquarium. Pass_Me_The_Remote reviews season 1 of the new #Netflix show #HitandRun. This is created by #LiorRaz as well as the other creator of #Fauda, #AviIssacharoff. This is the story of Segev Azulay, a tourist guide in Tel Aviv who investigates the murder of his wife Danielle Wexler (#KaleenOhm) and the trail leads him to New York and a mystery around the CIA and Mossad. Danielle is a dancer with the Israeli Batsheva Dance Company and has an offer from New York that might mean shifting there permanently. She stops for a coffee enroute to the airport and is run over by a car. Segev discovers messages on her phone that leads him to believe that hs wife has a past that has been kept under cover. He notices messages from Assaf (#LiorAshkenazy), a married Mossad director. The complex web untangles gently and ups the tension quotient. Along the way, his friend Tali Shapira (#MoranRosenblatt), a private detective tries to help him out.
It is quite obvious right in the beginning that the tourist guide persona surely has more to it than what it seems. The narrative however does not reveal too much about Segev’s past except when he turns to some of his friends from the past for help.
The early episodes set up a nice balance of suspense, tension and character development that keeps you on the edge of your seat. However, a combination of predictability and too many convoluted twists and turns make the second half of the nine-part series rather tedious. When Segev calls his father-in-law, Martin (#GreggHenry) and they do not make it for the funeral, you become suspicious. Segev gets caught in the feud between the national agencies and all he wants is the well-being of his daughter Ella (#netaOrbach).
#HitandRun is strictly for the fans of #LiorRaz. He carries off the lead character well, a tortured and intense version of Doron. The jury is out though in terms of whether this could perhaps have been a movie, rather than a series. A tighter plot, trademark suspense and some well-choreographed action sequences could have salvaged this show that does have a lot of promise!
