Is that what 45 years does to my favourite hero? What is we could make a film with Amitabh at 30 years of age? The angry young man all over again? Exciting prospect? Or disturbing? Ang Lee the Taiwanese genius known for his penchant to be at the forefront of technology puts forward a proposition that can revolutionise films and film-making completely!
ASHOKs’ FIVE reasons to watch #GeminiMan a cutting-edge technology laden action thriller starring #WillSmith and #WillSmith. Big Spoiler alert but this is a film about an ace shooter who is termed rogue by his own people and is then forced to confront a rival – a younger version of himself!
1. The story is nothing significant to write home about, but this is a one-time must-see movie for the sheer spectacle that it creates. In particular, the seven-minute bike chase sequence on the streets of Columbia stands out as a high intensity action that can give the Bond franchise or the Mission Impossible series a run for its money.
2. #GeminiMan is a technology geek’s delight. The combination of 4K shot at 120 frames per second, 3D graphics and Dolby vision makes the output a visual delight. Produced at a budget of approximately 150 USD, this is a film with the potential to materially change the craft of film-making forever.
3. Junior, the younger version of Will Smith at 23 years of age versus the veteran who plays his age at 51 looks as real as it gets. Although shot with a body double where the face has been digitally created, Lee gets the facial expressions and mannerisms spot on, perhaps buoyed on by an abundance of footage of Smith from his earlier films. The indoor and dark lit scenes work distinctly better though; the final scene on the University campus gives it away a little bit as the visage becomes more toon-like.
4. #BenedictWong plays Baron, the friendly all-season confidante and infuses much needed humour in the narrative. #MaryElizabethWinstead as Danny Zakarweski also impresses as the covert agent. The locales cut across Georgia, Columbia and Budapest and make for breath-taking backdrops.
5. #WillSmith has come a ling way with a career spanning thirty years now. Fans of the ageing actor may not agree but he is surely fading out. I am not sure this is the right kind of choice he should be making and that is something to think about.
The obvious reference in #GeminiMan is to the astronomical sign that is represented by the twins. Think deeper and you may just discover that the true reference is to someone else. #CliveOwen plays Clay Varris, the father who clones Junior. He may well be the villain, cruel and vicous, but is a father who truly loves his son and here is the real dichotomy of the Gemini Man!
